Electronic communication requires careful handling to ensure goodwill and clear communication. Email can increase our productivity, but it can also create delays or conflicts.

Here are some examples of how email, if not used properly, can work against us.

A vaguely written message will require further clarifying. When a reader does not know what to do, there will be a delay. On the other hand, when an email reader does not respond, the writer has to email again to confirm receipt.

The impact of language and tone on your email message also cannot be under-estimated. Because many people view email as informal, they are somewhat careless with their language, and this could create a strain on the relationship if the reader perceives the message to be rude or uncaring.
